For those of us with many tasks - please please - enable category sorting in ToDo - and ideally multi level sorting.
eg I use tasks sorted first by date and then category ALL the time in oulook. I need this in ToDo before it's really useful

You can do this by adding # (hashtags). Then you are able to filter or search for it, its even clickable to filter on these #tags

We really need to be able to group Tasks by Categories on the Web app. It is how we organize Tasks on the desktop app. Not having this option on the web app makes Tasks on the Web app entirely useless. Please add this option.

It's great that you have done the hard back-end word to sync the tag data, however for this to be really useful, it needs to be included in the desktop app as well and we need to be able to select a list/group/smart-something from the menu to look at all tasks that have a certain tag, which is consistent functionality to Outlook

I can see the categories in the browser-based version of ToDo, but as there's no way of filtering or searching by category, it's of very limited use.

Is there any plan to implement this on android/desktop app as well? I see hundreds of entries with generic "categories" title, but it is not clear which one is the leading one to "upvote" to have categories implemented on all platforms

When will assigning of categories be available on the Windows desktop and Android version of the app? This is a much needed feature!

Hi @Terry Larsen,
Your response, "Available on the web app of To Do," doesn't apply to the second part of the suggestion: "...and sort by categories within the app."
The To Do web app (along with the mobile apps) doesn't include an option to sort or filter (<--especially important) by categories. For those of us who use categories to keep track of which teammates/departments are working on what, what type of project each task is, etc., filtering by categories is an essential function.
I'm puzzled by the decision to eliminate helpful features from Outlook tasks in the transition to To Do. I understand that the goal was a streamlined, intuitive user experience, but giving power users additional options wouldn't ruin that experience. Additional features would actually prevent users who require greater customization from switching to the many rival task manager apps that have the options they need. Adding these options would also convince current users of other task apps that To Do can finally replicate their experience without requiring sacrifices in functionality and disruption of their workflow.
Thanks for listening to our feedback (2069 votes for this suggestion as I write this). I hope to see this feature implemented soon.

Really need the ability to SORT tasks by Category. Otherwise, what is the point in assigning the category?

I used Clearcontext for managing my tasks in outlook GTD style. This allows to encapsulate email communication with one click in a task or a calendar event and categorize these by context. Unfortunately there is nothing like this for the iphone/ipad. Sure, I can use tasktask to read my to-do lists in categories, but doesn't really help with the workflow if the emails and the calendar are separate apps. Wouldn't it be great if someone at Microsoft would really embrace the GTD methodology and give us an integrated solution?

@Terry Larsen writes: vailable on the web app of To Do. Is SORTING by categories available too? I think not. That would be a key element to add in. assigning categories only is too stiff. We need to be able to sort them, like in Outlook

I need this so badly. I wish the same flexible settings that the current Outlook todo has. I sort my tasks by category. I use a GTD approach for getting my work done. Every task has 2 categories. I can filter them by context (@cell phone) AND by project: .report for example. My system also uses task color coding and the due date field. I would love to see that functionality being carried over to MS Todo as well.
Right now MS Todo is pretty much unuseable for me. Stiff lists are a bad way to handle tasks that can be done in different contexts and within different projects at the same time. We need outlook's full task functionality in MS Todo -

Thanks for adding categories to To Do - however, for this to be useful, please add to the sort menu for My Day and Lists views. Ideally, the ability to filter by category would be helpful.

Please make it possible to organize by categories as well. Otherwise there is pretty much no use for this feature.
I also would like to see this feature in mobile apps -

Nice that the categories now synchronize, but I can't actually do anything with the category!
I can't sort by category, I can't use it to create a smart list. So - largely, useless!Categories into Lists as a smart list would be really beneficial
